Redemtech has been an original signatory of BAN’s Electronics Recycler’s Pledge of True Stewardship, which imposed the world’s strictest requirements for e-waste handling since 2004 and has operated in accordance with the standard for seven years. Redemtech as one of the founders of the e-Stewards Electronic Recycling accreditation has achieved its certification for all of its US facilities early in 2010.

Redemtech is aggressively pursuing certification for its integrated network of international TCM Centers across North America and Europe to ensure global companies can manage e-waste responsibly, accountably and consistently across their enterprise. In September 2010, Redemtech UK has become the first electronics recycler outside of the United States to be e-Stewards® Certified and three more European facilities are in queue to be certified in the next months. Redemtech is a wholly owned subsidiary of Micro Electronics, one of the largest privately held technology companies in the United States

The Certified e-Stewards® Initiative, is the world's first third-party audited and accredited international certification program for electronics recyclers that prohibits the export of e-waste to developing countries and enjoys the support of more than 70 environmental organizations. The e-Stewards initiative is a project of the Basel Action Network (BAN), which is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, charitable organization of the United States, based in Seattle, Washington. BAN is the global environmental waste watchdog group who first exposed the dumping of waste from electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) from developed countries to China and West Africa in 2001. The e-Stewards project was initiated in 2008 but it was not until early 2010 that the first certified e-Steward recyclers (including Redemtech) and the first three accredited e-Stewards certification bodies were announced. At the same time, the first US businesses, including several Fortune 500 companies, committed to targeting the use of e-Stewards Recyclers for their electronic asset disposition services and became e-Stewards Enterprises. BAN’s e-Stewards certification is described as the new gold standard for responsible electronics recycling and it has been recognized globally.

It is against the backdrop of the growing e-waste crisis that the e-Stewards Initiative was born. Without appropriate national and international legislation or enforcement in place in many regions, it is unfortunately left up to individual citizens, corporations, universities, cities – all of us – to figure out how to prevent the toxic materials in electronics from continuing to cause long term harm to human health and the environment, particularly in countries with developing economies.

The e-Stewards certification program for electronics recyclers is designed to provide market incentives that drive the certification of the entire recycling chain that is managing the toxic materials. In addition, early efforts are underway to develop a program to qualify or certify companies who collect and transport electronics, in order to increase the total volumes of electronics managed in a globally responsible manner. Together, these programs will create a network of responsible collection and processing entities, ensuring businesses and consumers alike that their old technology will not poison vulnerable populations, recycling workers, or the global ecosystem.
